Objective:

This project aimed to co-create a hearth—a cob-built, earth-based structure used for cooking and gathering—at a sanctuary that stewards perennial and medicinal plants while hosting healing retreats and educational workshops.

Why this action?

The sanctuary had been developing a beautiful outdoor gathering space, but lacked an infrastructure element to anchor meals and communal warmth. The hearth was envisioned as both a literal and symbolic center—a space for cooking, storytelling, ceremony, and care.

What happened:

We gathered to build a cob hearth using clay, sand, straw, and stone sourced nearby. The process involved mixing cob by foot, sculpting the base, and laying a foundation that will support future meals and fireside circles. The sanctuary team shared about their work with medicinal plants, and participants reflected on the elemental nature of building with earth and fire.

What we learned:

Even small-scale infrastructure builds can have huge ripple effects when rooted in care and aligned with the land’s purpose. The hearth not only supports physical nourishment but invites deeper community and ceremonial use of the space.
