A lot has happened in the past few months. This August summer holiday break is a great time to reflect back on what we have accomplished, and where we want to go next. For those of you new here, Rifai Sicilia is a cultural association that supports the ecological and economic development of the Sicilian Bioregion using regenerative finance weaving a network of people and projects together through trust networks.

Greenhouse Construction and 1 year anniversary

On July 6th 2024 the community celebrated Rifai Sicilia’s one year birthday from the time of our first mutual aid event in 2023. The day was extra special because we had just finished our new greenhouse at butterfly hill agroforestry farm. The greenhouse is 20 meters long and 6 meters wide with enough room to fit 1000 treelings in pots. This safe space for young plants will help us scale up our reforestation and agroforestry efforts this coming winter and spring with more moringa, avocados, acacia, almond, and carob trees. To top it off we even invited a local sicilian folk band to connect our new cultural practices with indigenous song and dance. The greenhouse was made possible by the donations from the Gitcoing Grants round 21 with funding from both climate solutions, celo rpgf, and mainly from Ma Earth matching rounds. The next big project to accomplish on the farm is to install a 10,000 liter cistern and drip irrigation lines for the 3 hectare site. The cistern will be filled from the retention pond in the center of the farm site giving us enough flexibility to capture rainwater in winter and retain it for the trees in the hot dry summers. This is becoming ever more important as drought in Sicily is intensifying.

We are facing the cultural climate problem from both sides as an offensive strategy to reforest the land, and a defense strategy to protect the forests we have from fires, a local citizen driven response to wild fires called Guardianship is the rotating schedule of watching for fires. Just the mere presence of guardians reduces arson and detects wild fires faster when they are smaller and easier to put out. Using Gitcoin donations we were able to host 2 day workshop for the community in Castellammare del Golfo and San Vito lo capo learning how to prepare and respond to forest fires for everyday people.

#OperationWebtree Silvi Partnership Update

The work on the farm is just a fractal of the larger watershed and bioregion. We have been busy educating and onboarding our regenerating community members to app.silvi.earth giving them the training to upload their tree planting dMRV (digital monitoring, reporting, and verification of eco credit claims). We have 8 agroforestry member sites and growing. To scale up the efforts in partnership with Silvi and the global #operationwebtree cohort we have defined our tree plan for Sicily including species, planting processes, and milestone payouts. We now have a clear structure for claims verification and rewards. 

Giveth Earth Round

We also had the pleasure to participate in the first Earth QF round on Giveth raising $716 in cryptocurrency donations across multiple chains. This money will go directly to the Silvi Tree planting liquidity pool to reward tree plantings in the Sicilian Bioregion. https://giveth.io/project/rifai-sicilia

Gitcoin Grants Round 21 

We have so far raised $12,583 over the course of 3 gitcoin and 1 Giveth rounds with half still left in the treasury. The next fundraising event is happening now with Gitcoin Grants Round 21. We are in the climate solutions round and the real word builders round. 

Climate solutions will continue to support agroforestry, reforestation, rewilding and forest fire protection initiatives in the bioregion. Our most recent initiative that we donated to 100 euros to support tree plantings at a local skatepark in Trapani which will serve as a cultural bridge to the youth. We have been recording our impact metrics using Karmagap with an opportunity to link the silvi dMRV to auto-attest impact claims on KarmaGap increasing our capacity to receive and report our regen activities. Real World Builders grant proposal is a collaboration with Grassroots Economics to create a mutual credit pool for regens in the bioregion starting with the treeplantings in Spring of 2025. Money raised from this round would go to seed a mutual credit liquidity pool where each member of Rifai Sicilia can offer their goods and service in the form of a digital gift card. Every gift card be exchanged between any other gift card in the pool. By creating our own gift cards that we exchange between our regional community in service to regeneration, the less fiat currency we need to achieve our impact goals.

Coordi-Nation ReFi Italia

We are working with our sister organization ReFi Italia as they are in the coordi-nations gitcoin round. The Coordi-Nation round is a pioneering collaboration between GreenPill Network, ReFi DAO, and Celo Public Goods aimed at fostering a global movement of regenerative communities leveraging Web3 technology to address local needs and create real-world impact with 50K USD matching fund. Funds raised will be shared among the regional nodes of Liminal Village, ReFi Calabria, and Rifai Sicilia to support our various regenerative initiatives. CoFi - ReFi Bridge

This comes as a continuation into our CoFi education series. Last month we hosted a community call with Peppe Littera developer of Sardex and Cycles money to talk about collaborative finance, mutual credit, and payment graphs and how our community to take steps to implement these tools.

Regen Foundation EnDAOment Cohort 4

We have been happy to be invited to participate in the Regen Foundation Endaoment cohort 4 this fall to help steward the token supply in service to regenerative cultures and equitable eco credit development. This comes at an important time as Regen Netrwork has reduced their validator set which secures the blockchain network. These changes are part of a broader organic restructuring process to make Regen Network ecosystem more lean and effective.

Cultural Association Formation 

These opportunities are opening the door to Rifai Sicilia becoming an legal entity in the form of a cultural association with 3 founding members President, Secretary, Treasurer, and a direttivo of 2 more people that can grow through proposal process which brings us to onchain governance as the legal entity is operated as a digital DAO where members have voting rights. Having a legal entity will allow us to access more donations, and fundraising, and have basic services like insurance for members and traditional banking access.

Sicilia- Calabria Cross Straight Collab

As the Sicilian bioregion continues to recognize itself we also recognize the connection between borders. Rifai Sicilia is a member node of ReFi italia which supports the development of regional nodes around the country including our Neighbor in Calabria where Maria is reawakening the landscapes through harmonious relationships between the feminine and masculine. By healing and repairing the social soil, the land was ready to receive tree plantings. Right after the visit, Pietrapaula was rocked by a 5.2 magnitude earthquake. ReFi Italia - ETH Milan, ETH Rome, Rifai Week 2.0

As summer comes to an end the conference circuit in Italy is heating up with a kickoff end of September with EthMilan.xyz , where the focus is on art culture and commerce, and a week later EthRome.org where the focus is on privacy and scaling.

Ending the year with Rifai Festa, a weeklong celebration of the watershed, bioregion, and territory building cultural bridges between villages and valleys. The plan is to visit, share, learn, and exchange with each of the 8 Rifai- Silvi sites in the bioregion meeting with the land stewards, learning each sites unique expression, and seeing the similarities across micro climates while updating the Silvi DMRV data. This will be anchored with a deep dive soil building and holistic grazing workshop at butterfly hill as we integrate animals and composting into the olive, wine, and agroforestry farm system as we prepare for the olive harvest and spring tree planting. All the while we are mapping the watershed, and defining and refining our mutual credit and services.

Trasmettendo con amore dalla Sicilia

Molto è accaduto negli ultimi mesi. Questa pausa estiva di agosto è un ottimo momento per riflettere su ciò che abbiamo realizzato e su dove vogliamo andare. Per coloro che sono nuovi qui, Rifai Sicilia è un'associazione culturale che supporta lo sviluppo ecologico ed economico della bioregione siciliana utilizzando la finanza rigenerativa, intrecciando una rete di persone e progetti attraverso reti di fiducia.

Costruzione della Serra e 1° Anniversario

Il 6 luglio 2024 la comunità ha celebrato il primo anniversario di Rifai Sicilia, ad un anno dal nostro primo evento di mutuo aiuto nel 2023. Il giorno è stato particolarmente speciale perché avevamo appena terminato la nostra nuova serra presso la fattoria agroforestale di Butterfly Hill. La serra è lunga 20 metri e larga 6 metri, con spazio sufficiente per ospitare 1000 piantine in vasi. Questo spazio sicuro per le giovani piante ci aiuterà a potenziare i nostri sforzi di riforestazione e agroforestazione nel prossimo inverno e in primavera, permettendoci di avere più alberi di moringa, avocado, acacia, mandorlo e carrubo. Per completare la giornata, abbiamo anche invitato una band folk siciliana locale per connettere le nostre nuove pratiche culturali con canti e danze indigene. Abbiamo concluso la giornata con una processione musicale e un battesimo sperimentando di persona il sistema di irrigazione a pioggia.

Finanziamenti e Progetti Futuri

La serra è stata possibile grazie alle donazioni del round 21 dei Gitcoin Grants con finanziamenti legati a soluzioni climatiche, celo rpgf, e principalmente dal round di Ma Earth. Il prossimo grande progetto da realizzare nella fattoria è installare una cisterna da 10.000 litri e delle linee di irrigazione a goccia per il sito di 3 ettari. La cisterna sarà riempita dal laghetto di ritenzione al centro del sito della fattoria, dandoci abbastanza flessibilità per catturare l'acqua piovana in inverno e trattenerla per gli alberi durante le calde estati secche. Questo sta diventando sempre più importante poiché la siccità in Sicilia si sta intensificando.

Prevenzione degli Incendi

Stiamo affrontando il problema del clima culturale su entrambi i fronti: una strategia offensiva per riforestare la terra e una strategia difensiva per proteggere le foreste che abbiamo dagli incendi. Una risposta locale guidata dai cittadini agli incendi boschivi chiamata "Guardiania" è il programma di sorveglianza rotante per gli incendi. La sola presenza di guardiani riduce gli incendi dolosi e rileva gli incendi boschivi più velocemente quando sono più piccoli e più facili da spegnere. Utilizzando le donazioni di Gitcoin, siamo stati in grado di organizzare un workshop di 2 giorni per la comunità a Castellammare del Golfo e San Vito Lo Capo, per insegnare alle persone comuni come prepararsi e rispondere agli incendi boschivi.

Il denaro raccolto da questo round andrebbe a finanziare un pool di liquidità di mutuo credito, dove ogni membro di Rifai Sicilia può offrire i propri beni e servizi sotto forma di una carta regalo digitale. Ogni carta regalo può essere scambiata con qualsiasi altra carta regalo nel pool. Creando le nostre carte regalo da scambiare tra la nostra comunità regionale al servizio della rigenerazione, avremo bisogno di meno valuta fiat per raggiungere i nostri obiettivi d'impatto.

Partecipazione alla Coorte 4 di Regen Foundation EnDAOment

Siamo felici di essere stati invitati a partecipare alla coorte 4 di Regen Foundation Endaoment questo autunno per aiutare a gestire la fornitura di token al servizio delle culture rigenerative e dello sviluppo equo degli eco-crediti. Questo arriva in un momento importante, poiché Regen Network ha ridotto il loro set di validatori che protegge la rete blockchain. Collaborazione tra Sicilia e Calabria

Mentre la bioregione siciliana continua a riconoscersi, riconosciamo anche la connessione tra i confini. Rifai Sicilia è un nodo membro di ReFi Italia che supporta lo sviluppo di nodi regionali in tutto il paese, incluso il nostro vicino in Calabria, dove Maria sta risvegliando i paesaggi attraverso relazioni armoniose tra il femminile e il maschile. Guarendo e riparando il suolo sociale, la terra è stata pronta per ricevere le piantagioni di alberi. Subito dopo la visita, Pietrapaula è stata scossa da un terremoto di magnitudo 5.2. Fortunatamente nessuno o nessun edificio è stato ferito o danneggiato.

Questo sarà ancorato a un workshop di costruzione del suolo e pascolo olistico a Butterfly Hill mentre integriamo animali e compostaggio nel sistema agricolo di olive, vino e agroforestazione mentre ci prepariamo per la raccolta delle olive e la piantagione di alberi in primavera.
