We want to create a Sicilian fire prevention coordination network

IMPACTS

- Raising awareness and informing citizens and associations about the role they can play in wildfire prevention.
- Presentation of successful experiences and innovative projects already underway.
- Facilitating the creation of a collaborative network among citizens, associations, institutions, and the academic world for wildfire prevention.
- Development of concrete proposals regarding the active role of citizens in prevention efforts.
- Mapping existing skills and competencies within the Sicilian wildfire prevention network to optimize resources and collaboration.
- Planning and defining future strategies to engage citizens and to establish a Regional Sicilian Fire Prevention Coordination Body.

The event took place in Palermo, at a venue called Don Nino Mind-Food. It ran from 10 AM to 5 PM. It was promoted by Fenice Verde, Basta Incendi, Collettivo Rewild Sicily, and COV (Regional Operational Coordination of Volunteer Services). The invitation was extended to all citizens, associations, informal community groups active in the area, and civil protection organizations.

During the morning, there was a presentation of several Sicilian associations that are involved in different ways in addressing the wildfire issue, with time reserved for questions and open discussion. We also presented our association and our proposals to tackle the wildfire problem.

After the lunch break, three working groups were created:

Mapping of the skills and expertise of local associations
Community organization
Prevention, reporting, and firefighting

Following the discussion on these three complementary aspects, a final feedback session was held to share the outcomes.

The event was a success in terms of exchange, relationship building, and shared vision.
